Built in the 1020's it was scheduled for renovation in order to better accommodate the community and governmental agencies which need to operate in the immediate community and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. It is an asset to the community and to the County, particularly as rental costs have escalated. Space is not readily available either in Carrboro or Chapel Hill . There �x also the realization that (1) some agencies need to be co-located because they are used by the same citizenry and (2) the building will be more suitable for office use once-it is renovated. Four alternatives are outlined in attachment: ~_ Alternative l , Maintain exiting agencies and add the Senior Citizen ''� � Volunteer Program (RSVP) and allocate unassigned space to the Senior Citizen Program of the Department on Aqinr No Cost Saving Alternative 2: Maintain existing agencies and allocate some unassigned space and part of the space used by Day Care for occupancy and '— uy RSVP, the Driver's li cen se Examiner and Sheriff's Office. $18,400 Annual Cost Savings Maintain existing agencies except Day Care; add RSVP, Alternative 3: Drjner.s Ljcense Examiner, Sheriff's Office and Social Services Office from Carr Mill. . $34,409 Annual Cost Savings 4,000 One-Time Repair & Renovation Cost To House Day Care In The Cafeteria Building Alternative 4: Maintain and add agencies,as in Alternative 3 except Sheriff's Office. $30,400 Annual Cost Savings 4,000 One-Time Repair & Renovation Cost To House Day Care In The Cafeteria Building 4,000 Annual Cost of Renting Sheriff Space Elsewhe IMPACT: Advantages and disadvantages would vary depending on the alternative decided upon. RECOMMENDATION: 1. Approve Alternative 3 providing public hearing in the community shows community as well as Board acceptance. This is believed to combine the most related agencies and is the most cost effective.
