. _ <br /> _ - 123 <br /> _ <br /> . <br /> - <br /> fauna identified by the state as species of special concern; <br /> the Carolina Darter, in Cane Creek near SR1115; the Red <br /> Shouldered Hawk, near SR1956 and SR1005; and the plant <br /> Atlantic Isopyrum, at the northern end of Cane Creek <br /> Reservoir. A species of special concern is one is faced with <br /> major habitat loss in the county, exists in small <br /> populations, or the target of exploitation. In addition, two <br /> exemplary plant communities, at Pickards Mountain and <br /> Crawford Mountain, have been identified. <br /> Bingham Township is historically one of the wealthier <br /> rural townships and its past has been well documented, in <br /> part, so that knowledge about historically and structurally <br /> important sites innundated by Cane Creek Reservoir would not <br /> be lost. Six mill sites on Cane, Turkey Run, and Tom's Creeks <br /> have been identified and date back to the eighteenth century. <br /> The North Carolina Division of Archives and History has <br /> identified six buildings in the township as architecturally <br /> and/or historically significant. One building complex, the <br /> Bingham School at Oaks, is listed in the National Register of <br /> Historic Places. There are thirty recorded archeological <br /> sites in Bingham Township. Approximately half, however, will <br /> be innundated by the completed Cane Creek Reservoir. <br /> 410 The spiritual and community life of the township is <br /> served by its ten active churches and additional community <br /> buildings. Many, such as Cane Creek Baptist Church and <br /> Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, serve as the nucleus of stable <br /> and long standing rural communties. <br /> Existing Land Use <br /> The , township's 48,900 acres can be broken down into the <br /> following categories: <br /> Agricultural: 21,030 acres, 43.0% of township <br /> Residential (0-5 ac) : 1,435 acres, 2.9% of township <br /> (5.1-10 ac) : 140 acres, 0.3% of township <br /> Commercial/Industrial: 180 acres, 0.3%. of township <br /> Institutional: 90 acres, 0.2% of township <br /> Drinking Water Supply: 755 acres, 1.5% of township <br /> Vacant/Other: 25,270 acres, 51.6% of township <br /> Figure 3- denotes this graphically. <br /> 410 _ <br /> 3.11-9 <br />
