Recognition of Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy Graduates <br /> The Board considered recognizing the recent graduates of the 1st Basic Law <br /> Enforcement Training Academy established through a partnership with Durham Technical <br /> Community College. <br /> Sheriff Blackwood reviewed the following background information: <br /> BACKGROUND: The Orange County Sheriff's Office included in its System Plan a goal of <br /> establishing a Basic Law Enforcement Training ("BLET") Academy, which would meet and <br /> exceed minimum State requirements. The underlying idea was to create an Academy with the <br /> look and feel of the Sheriff's Office, utilize in-house instructors as well as those from local <br /> agencies, and offer agency specific training, with the overall goal of exceptional training <br /> culminating in competent and eager graduates. After much collaboration between Durham <br /> Technical Community College administrators and Sheriff's Office Training Division staff, the <br /> BLET 1st Class began on May 2, 2016 and graduated September 22, 2016. <br /> Several members of staff from the Sheriff's office gave a synopsis of the cadet <br /> process. <br /> Sheriff Blackwood thanked the Commissioners and Durham Tech, saying this is a <br /> dream come true. He introduced each of the cadets. <br /> The Board recognized the recent graduates of the 1st Basic Law Enforcement Training <br /> Academy. <br /> 5. Public Hearings <br /> a. North Carolina Community Transportation Program Administrative and Capital <br /> Grant Applications for FY 2018 <br /> The Board considered: conducting a public hearing to receive public comments on the <br /> proposed grant application; approving the Community Transportation Program Grant <br /> application for FY 2018 in the total amount of$392,866 with a local match total of$48,285 to <br /> be provided when necessary; authorizing the Chair to sign the Community Transportation <br /> Program Resolution and the Local Share Certification for Funding forms; and authorizing the <br /> Chair and the County Attorney to review and sign the annual Certifications and Assurances. <br /> Peter Murphy, Orange County Public Transportation Administrator, reviewed the <br /> following background information: <br /> BACKGROUND: Each year, the NCDOT Public Transportation Division accepts requests for <br /> administrative and capital needs for county-operated community transportation programs.
