ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 3, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~'G <br />SUBJECT: Older Americans Month Proclamation <br />DEPARTMENT: Aging & Advisory Board PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />on Aging <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Older Americans Month Proclamation <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Jerry Passmore, 245-2009 <br />Jack Chestnut, Chair <br />Janice Tyler, 968-2071 <br />PURPOSE: To join federal and state governments in designating the month of May as Older <br />Americans Month, a time to honor older residents for their contributions to society and to <br />Orange County. <br />BACKGROUND: For a number of years, the Orange County Commissioners have issued a <br />proclamation for Older Americans Month. In 2007, there are over 17,000 Orange County <br />residents who are sixty years of age and over and 1,500 residents who are over eighty-five <br />years old. The theme for Older Americans Month is "Making Choices for a Healthier Future." <br />Special events are planned for the month that include the official grand opening ceremony of the <br />new Robert and Pearl Seymour Center on May 24th at 10:00 a.m. and the "Creativity and <br />Aging" Information Day on May 30th from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. A full listing of special offerings <br />is in the May-June issue of the Senior Times Newspaper. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with approval of the <br />proclamations. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation <br />designating May as Older Americans Month and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br />
