This project fuses youth and
civic leadership training, media arts and performance, and historical education, For the past four years.
FYR co-directors and a team of adult mentors have worked with a total of sixty students to create a
monthly radio show on UNC-Chapel Mill's student-run radio station,WXYC.. Live FYR broadcasts feature
youth-produced audio documentaries, performances by local youth spoken ward artists, and discussions
about issues that affect our students and their communities.Youth in FYR develop media literacy,
production,script-writing:and public
speaking skills,and they further their1
understanding of local history and
politics. This year,we piloted a T"
summer audio-immersion program in
collaboration with the Beatmaking Lab
and Sacrificial Poets to supplement s
the annual radio program. A dozen
high school students traveled with us
to the Allied Media Conference in
Detroit,and then participated in a
I
series of workshops that supported 1
the youth in the creation of audio
documentaries.
3) Oral History Trust and Neighborhood Soundwalk: Our ongoing oral history initiatives with long-time
residents of this County fuel and deepen our education work. our oral histories are held in the
`Northside Memory Project"archive, which is utilized for our workshops and ongoing educational work.
This year,we began a new oral history series on"Black Lives t0after"to document the histories of police
relationships with communities of color and to explore the power of the ongoing work for racial justice in
this county. Additionally,we have produced a No€thside Soundwalk,an audio-documentary-tour featuring
fifteen oral histories of the neighborhood&civil rights struggle. This audio-tour orients hundreds of young
people each year(250 so far this fiscal year)to learn about the history, transformation.and vision for our
community.
All of these programs aim to preserve and empower local communities:we work to preserve the historically
African American community of Northside through oral history preservation work and a neighborhood sound
walk;we empower elderly neighbors to share their history with younger generations and intentionally engage
with the community;and we also empower youth to develop and share their stories and perspectives with the
community through Fusion Youth Radio.
We believe that our Youth Leadership and Civil Rights Education programs address a variety of chosen
TownfCounty prwritlea.our programs faster creative engagement and civic participation across race, class.
and age barriers by intentionally focusing on innovative, intergenerational education programs that address a
Ruin Application 1124/2016 5.104.30 IPM
