AGENCY INFORMATION
Please provide the following information about your agency (Limit of 2 pages total):
a) Years in Operation, Date of Incorporation (Month/Year)
The Orange County Literacy Council was incorporated in October 1984. We have been in
operation for 31 years.
b) Agency's Purpose/Mission
Orange Literacy envisions a community where literacy is available to all. Our mission is to help
adults reach their education, employment and life goals. We do this by providing free, flexible
instruction in reading, writing and basic math, English and computer skills and GED
preparation.
c) Types of Services the Agency Provides
Orange Literacy provides free one-on-one and small group instruction in reading, writing, basic
math, computer literacy, GED preparation and English language skills throughout Orange
County. Orange Literacy partners with El Centro Hispano and the Chapel Hill Training and
Outreach Project to offer comprehensive family literacy in Carrboro and Hillsborough
respectively, under funding from the Orange County Partnership for Young Children. Further,
Orange Literacy offers citizenship education as a sub-grantee of Church World Services (CWS)
on a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration grant.
d) Agency's Experience with Similar Programs as the Funding Request
Since it's inception in 1984, Orange Literacy has built a strong and successful record of helping
adult learners identify and achieve their short- and long-term goals. Many adult literacy and
ESOL students have progressed in their employment goals, such as getting a job, being
promoted to a higher-paying job or moving to a new job that pays a higher wage. Other adult
learners have achieved their goal of a better education for themselves and their children by
passing the GED, developing the literacy skills of their young children and grandchildren, or
helping their older children with homework. In addition to Adult Literacy, our flagship program,
Orange Literacy offers comprehensive family literacy (in partnership with El Centro Hispano
and Orange County Head Start/Early Head Start), citizenship classes (through USCIS funding)
and weekly writing workshops at the area homeless shelters.
We work very closely with the NC Community College System (NCCCS), the entity charged
with providing formal Basic Skills and adult ESL instruction in the state. Orange Literacy staff
adheres to NCCCS standards for program quality, staff and tutor training and students and
program evaluation.
e) Other Pertinent Agency Information
n/a
Main Application 1/26/2016 5:06:15 PM Page 4 of
