133 <br /> PUBLIC INTEREST AREAS: Public Interests Areas are public or <br /> quasi-public lands, such as Duke Forest, that provide <br /> significant educational and recreational opportunities. These <br /> lands also form a crucial component of the County's open <br /> space system. <br /> WATER SUPPLY WATERSHED: A portion of the Upper Eno watershed, <br /> which furnishes the Town of Hillsborough and the Orange- <br /> , <br /> Alamance Water System with its water supply, lies along the <br /> western boundary of the Township. Additionally, a small <br /> portion of the Little River Watershed, which drains into the <br /> Little River Reservoir in northern Durham County, lies along <br /> e$ the northern boundary of the Township. This classification <br /> refers to land that should be protected from development that <br /> might cause water quality problems for existing and potential <br /> drinking water supplies. <br /> WATER QUALITY CRITICAL AREA: Land in the Water Supply <br /> Watershed that drains directly into water supply impoundments <br /> and feeder streams below the first tributary prior to <br /> entering the impoundment are designated as Water Quality <br /> Critical Areas. These lands require an even greater degree of <br /> protection from the adverse impacts of development. <br /> AGRICULTURAL RESIDENTIAL: The northern area of the Township, <br /> where agriculture is an important land uses, is classified in <br /> this manner. <br /> RURAL RESIDENTIAL: Much of the land in the southern third of <br /> the Township is classified as Rural Residential, which <br /> indicates that the most suitable land use is low density, <br /> non-farm residential development. <br /> TEN YEAR TRANSITION: Land classified in this manner indicates <br /> that public services from the Town of Hillsborough are likely <br /> within ten years. Most of the land adjacent to the Town's <br /> planning jurisdiction on the south and east and in close <br /> proximity to major intersections is designated as Ten Year <br /> Transition. Approximately nine acres north of the Town, <br /> adjacent to the Highland Woods subdivision, is also <br /> classified in this manner. The land use in much of Ten Year <br /> Transition area consists of medium density subdivisions <br /> already served with a public water supply from the Town of <br /> Hillsborough. <br /> TWENTY YEAR TRANSITION: Most of the land adjacent to the <br /> Town's planning jurisdiction that is less developed than land <br /> • in the Ten Year Transition areas is designated as Twenty Year <br /> 3.9-16 <br />
