• 125 <br /> The Town of Hillsborough has one of the richest histories of <br /> any town in North Carolina, a wealth that extends outside the <br /> Town limits. Two private homes east of Town have been <br /> identified by the State Division of Archives and History as <br /> architecturally and/or historically significant to the area. <br /> One of the homes, Ayr Mount, is on the National Register of <br /> Historical Places. The eighteenth century grave sites of Gov. <br /> Thomas Burke and one of the oldest Meeting of Friends in the <br /> State are north of Town. Eight archaeological sites outside <br /> • <br /> the Town's corporate limits have been recorded with the State <br /> Archaeology Branch. <br /> The spiritual and community life of the Township is focused <br /> on the Town of Hillsborough. Several rural churches, though, <br /> serve as the nucleus of long standing, stable rural <br /> communities. <br /> Existina Land Use <br /> Hillsborough Township's 15,100 acres can be broken down into <br /> . three administrative jurisdictions, the Town of Hillsborough, <br /> County planning jursidiction, and the Hillsborough <br /> Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) which is land adjacent to <br /> the Town's municipal boundaries for which Town land use <br /> regulations may still apply.
