To provide accurate information, counseling and <br /> referrals about HIV transmission, AIDS, and prevention <br /> services to individuals in Orange County through the personal <br /> contacts with the community volunteer "natural helpers" . <br /> 6. To identify, recruit, and train community volunteers to <br /> serve as community resources and program implementors for the <br /> • AIDS education program within the minority communities. <br /> 7. To initiate and provide special small group programs <br /> dealing with health issues of minority students, including <br /> AIDS, in the Orange County and Chapel Hill/Carrboro City <br /> Schools through trained Public Health Nurses. • <br /> Activities: <br /> A. Develop a community-based "natural helpers" network <br /> within the minority communities. This network will be <br /> comprised of residents of the community and will provide <br /> accurate information and referrals <br /> B. Identify, recruit, and train 5-10 community <br /> volunteers from Northern Orange County and 5-10 from <br /> Southern Orange (including Chapel Hill and Carrboro; , <br /> 100% black, at least 30% male) to provide information, <br /> advice and programs in the black communities. A special <br /> effort will be made to recruit black youths to comprise <br /> approximately 30-50% of this group <br /> C. To maintain a minimum of 10 volunteers in both the <br /> Southern and Northern part of Orange county, the project <br /> coordinator will identify, recruit, and train other • <br /> volunteers as needed. <br /> D. Provide ongoing training and support tet maintain our <br /> pool of community "natural helpers" throughout Orange <br /> County to provide accurate information and referral. <br /> E. To provide educational programs about AIDS, HIV <br /> transmission and prevention, services in the community <br /> that can help reduce HIV and transmission and the <br /> special risks to black youth for HIV infection to 20 <br /> community groups and black churches in Orange County. <br /> These programs will be provided by the project <br /> coordinator and the advisory board. <br /> • <br /> • <br />
