i~,
referral system to link patients with the appropriate services. This is a service
more easily accessed by Orange County residents discharged from UNC hospitals,
rather than those from other hospital systems. However, a resident or family
member can call the OCDOA anytime and get a home assessment and begin the
referral process for services.
Kate Barrett of the OCDOA presented a directory of services for county
residents. The directory includes contact names and numbers, services that are
provided and can be offered in the home. Free to all residents, the directory is
supported by donations. Barrett recommended the book as a resource .for those
needing assistance, and also recommended calling the OCDOA in times of need.
The duty of Gwen Phillips of the Orange County Department of Social Services is
to monitor the local nursing homes. If a resident can not stay in their private
homes then they are placed in a facility that can provide them with care. Also a
person in a facility can still get help from the county in a nursing home. Phillips
complimented the local nursing homes as being outstanding places to live if someone
can not live independently. The state regulates how the facility should be operated.
Orange County is lucky to have some of the best facilities in the country. for their
residents and more people are moving here because the quality of care that is
offered.
If a resident is active and would like an outlet then Laura Deloye of Senior Care of
Orange County addresses the need for daycare for adults. The center has various
hours and the rates are for single persons or married couples. Senior Care of
Orange County has a sliding fee scale and charges up to $70.00 per day. The
center has activities planned and is a very good social outlet. The center serves
functioning adults that can take care of themselves. There are no medical services
provided at the center.
Carol Taylor of Piedmont Health System supports the development. of P.A.C.E
.(Program of All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly) which helps low-income
elderly(Medicaid /Medicnre eligible) to remain in their home as long as possible
with community-based health care. They are currently waiting on a grant award.
Florence Soltys of the Orange County Advisor Board on Aging mentioned that UNC
Hospital needs to include in their emergence entrance an admission area for the
aging adults. She used the example of the pediatrics entrance. They should have
Page 15 of 18
