ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: April 10, 2007 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. a -- G <br />SUBJECT: Orange County Senior Games Proclamation <br />DEPARTMENT: Orange County Department on <br />Aging <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Proclamation <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Jerry Passmore, 245-2009 <br />Janice Tyler, 968-2071 <br />Department on Aging <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the weeks of April 23 -May 17, 2007 as Orange County Senior <br />Games Events Days and May 15 -July 28, 2007 as SilverArts days and to encourage residents <br />age 55 and over to participate and the general public to be observers. <br />BACKGROUND: The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May 1988 with 69 <br />participants in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, and with 100 Orange County <br />volunteers. In the years since 1988, the numbers have steadily grown, as organizers placed <br />more emphasis on year round wellness programming and added new events. Each of the 180 <br />plus participants benefit greatly from participation in the games. This year marks the 20tH <br />anniversary of the Orange County Senior Games. Over the years, the games have expanded <br />both by the number of participants and the number of events offered. <br />SilverArts, celebrating its 10th anniversary, began in 1997 with its first senior juried show. A <br />variety of art forms are entered by senior artists and are on display such as -visual arts, <br />sculpture, pottery, jewelry making and lace making, photography and woodwork - to name a <br />few. The SilverArts Opening Reception Tea will be held this year at the Robert and Pearl <br />Seymour Center on Monday, May 21 at 3 p.m. <br />This year's events schedule is as follows: <br />Mon., Apr. 23 <br />Racquetball: 9 a.m. Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA <br />Billiards: l0 a.m. M & M Billiards, Hillsborough <br />
