1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No )(_D <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: November 1, 1994 <br /> SUBJECT: Information Highway Process <br /> DEPARTMENT County Manager PUBLIC HEARING YES NO X <br /> ATTACHMENT(S) INFORMATION CONTACT <br /> None Rod Visser, ext 2300 <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBER <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Mebane 227-2031 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> PURPOSE: To receive a report on the North Carolina Information Highway <br /> grant application process. <br /> BACKGROUND: At the October 18 meeting, the Board of Commissioners <br /> received a report on the North Carolina Information Highway from <br /> representatives of the State' s Information Highway Office and the <br /> telephone companies that are working with the State on this project. <br /> The State staff member also described a $7 million grant program for <br /> local government entities to assist in gaining access to the <br /> Information Highway. <br /> Orange County' s grant application package was delivered on October 24 . <br /> The State has established an extremely short suspense on this process, <br /> with applications due in Raleigh on November 4. As this agenda item <br /> was being prepared, staff from the County, Orange County Schools, and <br /> the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools were arranging joint discussions <br /> to explore possibilities for cooperative efforts to pursue Information <br /> Highway grant funding, either now or at some time in the future. <br /> At tonight' s meeting, staff will present a brief oral report on the <br /> prospects for funding through the Information Highway grant application <br /> process. <br /> RECONDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board receive the <br /> report as information. <br />
