BACKGROUND: The Jail project has been under development for more than a year. The County received approval in April, 1994, for an additional $1,000,000 from the Federal Marshal's office. Although original plans had been reviewed and approved by the State,this significant modification served to restart the approval process. Presently, both the schematic and the design development drawings for the expanded project have been approved by the State. It is anticipated that construction documents will be submitted to the State by the end of October and approval received within four to six weeks thereafter. The total budget for this project is$2,000,000. The Board approved additional funds for the Courthouse addition in August, 1994. The architect has worked diligently with Judge Battle to establish an acceptable program within a short time frame in anticipation that the Courthouse addition could be bid in tandem with the Jail project. Theoretically, by bidding the two projects together,economy of scale will allow the funds to go further on the smaller project. The total budget for this project is$435,000. Alan Baldwin,Grier-Fripp Architects,will be present to share the plans for both projects and answer any questions which the Board may have. RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board accept the report as information and approve the plans as presented.
