ASSEMBLY OF GOVERNMENTS <br />AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: March 29, 2007 <br />SUBJECT: Assembly of Governments Discussion Items <br />DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />As noted in "Background" section Laura Blackmon, 245-2300 <br />PURPOSE: To discuss topics of mutual interest among the governing boards of Orange <br />County and the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough. <br />1) Sustainable Economic Development <br />a. Update on EDC Strategic Plan and Overview of Work Plan for 2007-2008 <br />In 2005, the Orange County Economic Development Commission completed its five-year <br />strategic plan, Investing in Innovation. The plan has been endorsed by the Orange County <br />Board of Commissioners, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen, the Chapel Hill Town Council, and <br />the Hillsborough Town Board, as well as by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce <br />and the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce. Dianne Reid, Orange County <br />Economic Development Director, will provide a brief update on where efforts currently stand <br />with the strategic plan, the goals for the year for the four plan workgroups, and the other goals <br />of the Economic Development Commission (see attachment). <br />Attachment 1— Economic Development Commission 2007-08 Priorities <br />b. Discussion of Economic Development throughout the County <br />As requested by Carrboro Alderman Joal Hall Broun, Dianne Reid will also provide an overview <br />and update on the County's three Economic Development Districts. Other Town staff or Board <br />members may provide additional information on their economic development goals, followed by <br />an open discussion of: <br />Do the goals align? <br />Are there ways of strengthening relationships between the County and Towns <br />in pursuit of common goals? <br />
