4 <br /> Triangle J Council of Governments <br /> Economic Development Report to Local Governments <br /> Summary of 1993/94 Accomplishments <br /> Strategic Economic Planning and Cooperation <br /> 1. Created a Task Force on a Competitive Economy to follow up on recommendations of the <br /> World Class Region 1992 Conference. Developed several key contacts in State Government, <br /> etc.for post conference venture work. <br /> 2. Served with the Governor's Task Force to create the State's"Comprehensive Economic <br /> Development Plan" and draft legislation to create the regional partnerships for economic <br /> development. Lobbied for inclusion of the Triangle J region's economic development priorities <br /> in the State's Plan. <br /> 3. Participated in an NCSU-led effort to gain federal funds and programs for high-tech, <br /> experimental projects in the Triangle. Used the Partnership for Leadership (CEO Group) <br /> meetings to bring many key leaders together to promote a "regional voice." Worked with the <br /> Central Carolina Consortium and the UNC Center for Educational Leadership to coordinate <br /> planning and delivery of quality school to work training programs. <br /> 4. Promoted the COG's Geographic Information System to RDRA, the State DOC,various <br /> other key groups. We are now a party to the planning led by MCNC for the Information <br /> Highway project. <br /> 5. Promoted regional cooperation among chambers and local governments. Held several <br /> meetings with RDRA leaders. Worked on the American Airlines Hub retention and London <br /> Gateway efforts. Regional Group Leaders luncheons resulted a Regional Town Hall initiative. <br /> • Activities to Internationalize the Region's Economy <br /> 1. Supported the Research Triangle World-Trade Center as corporate secretary and executive <br /> board member. Lobbied legislature for$294,000 in educational program funds for 1994. <br /> Assisted in obtaining other public support, served on nominating committee,worked on the <br /> Annual Board meeting. <br /> 2. Maintained world trade contacts via the North Carolina World Trade Center, elected 1993 <br /> through 1995 State Board Secretary. Advisor for the State NCWTA Annual Conference. <br /> NCWTA received the Presidential"EXPORT"Award at the 1993 Annual Conference. <br /> 3. Served as the grantee for Foreign Trade Zone #93;made numerous presentations,recruited <br /> new Board members. Prepared FTZ annual report. Completed contractual negotiations with <br /> the new operator,Long Transportation,Inc. for a general purpose FTZ site with distribution <br /> and warehousing capacity. Obtained approval from the US FTZ Board for the needed <br /> boundary modifications and operator change. <br /> 4. Responsible for the FTZ #93 Subzones: Subzone 93 A, Mallinckrodt Medical and 93 B,IBM. <br /> Submitted the application for Subzone 93 C,Merck Pharmaceuticals in Wilson. Working now <br /> with two new applicants and with US Customs to develop two new subzones. <br />
