9 <br /> 6. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: (Include qualifications of project personnel and <br /> timetable of activities. Attach extra sheet, if necessary. ) <br /> Orange County has completed a county-wide inventory of historic <br /> architecture and archaeological sites in the unincorporated portions of the <br /> county. The survey identified 665 structures and 140 archaeological sites. <br /> The Historic Preservation Commission now seeks to. publish the results in <br /> the inventory and include historic properties surveyed in the Towns of <br /> Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and Mebane. <br /> The publication will feature a description of the history of the <br /> county, chapters on architecture and archaeology with individual entries <br /> for properties and sites listed during the survey. Text will be <br /> supplemented with black and white photographs and stories of the people <br /> associated with the sites. The manuscript of the text has been completed <br /> with guidance from the State Historic Preservation Office and the Historic <br /> Preservation Commission. Preparation of the layout, graphics, photographs, <br /> cover design, etc. , and coordination with a printing company will take <br /> approximately twelve to fifteen months. <br /> The project will be coordinated by the Orange County Historic <br /> Preservation Commission with assistance from the Orange County Planning and <br /> Inspections Department. Members of the Commission are appointed by the <br /> County Commissioners and are required by ordinance to have special <br /> interest, education or experience in history, architecture, landscape <br /> architecture, archaeology, or related fields. <br /> 7. JUSTIFICATION OF PROJECT: Explain briefly how this project relates to <br /> the responsibilities or goals of your organization. <br /> As part of its comprehensive planning program, Orange County has identified <br /> and is taking measures to protect its cultural resources. Publication of <br /> the inventory will produce a principal educational tool to inform Orange <br /> County residents and visitors of the County's irreplaceable historic and <br /> archaeological resources. The purpose is to increase the awareness of <br /> property owners, developers, and the general public.
