Box 766
Graham,NC 27253
Dear Mr. Dyer:
I appreciate the opportunity to have spoken with you regarding your decision to place"No
Parking"signs along Whitfield Road near several gates to the Korstian Division of the Duke
Forest To provide you with some background I have enclosed a publication which describes the
history and uses of the Forest.
The Duke Forest has been owned and managed by Duke University as an outdoor teaching
and research laboratory since 1931, During this period the public has not been restricted from
entering these lands so long as certain guidelines are closely followed and the public use does not
interfere with the Forest's academic mission. Except for certain designated picnic sites, available
by reservation, the University has not constructed or maintained any facilities for public recreation.
Recognizing that public use of the Faie..tit has increased dramatically over the past few
years, and that this trend is likely to continue, additional guidelines may become necessary in order
to meet teaching and research requirements. Duke University is therefore not in favor of
establishing a parking area which would undoubtedly encourage public use. Please do not hesitate
to contact me if there is additional information I could provide or if I can be of assistance in any
way.
Sincerely,
p4414..ktrrr/1t,61cc.v.,
Judson Edebum
Duke Forest Resource Manager
enclosure
cc w/o enclosure: Dr.Norm Christensen
Dr, Charles Putman
COMRININC THE FORMER SCHOOL OF FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES AND THE MARINE I..ARORATORY
TO -TYdd 1SIG W17Hb'a9 ±oa * EL890L50T6T TE:91 b661/9Z/8O
