C 27514 August 19, 1981 TELEPHONE 929 . 6185 REPORT OF PRELIMINARY BUILDING SURVEY NORTHSIDE MULTI-PURPOSE CENTER, CHAPEL HILL, N. C. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Northside Multi-Purpose Center Building is the remaining classroom wing of the original Northside School. The building is a one story, brick wall, wood frame structure with shingle roof and contains approximately 10,000 ft of gross floor area. The space is subdivided into eight class- rooms (24' x 30'), two toilet rooms, and general offices, connected by a wide central corridor, which provides a flexible arrangement of uses. The building is now used by J.O.C.C.A. and other agencies serving the elderly, and it houses a children's day care center at the north end. The Orange-Person-Chatham Mental Health Center is located in an adjacent building on the same site. There is ample paved parking, circulation and open space on the site. The land and buildings are owned by Orange County. All needed utilities are available at the site and most of them were upgraded during remodeling of the Mental Health Center building. GENERAL CONDITION OF MULTI-PURPOSE BUILDING: The structural system appears to be sound and adequate for the intended uses. The roof has been maintained in serviceable condition by the County but may need replacement eventually and should be examined criti- cally before other improvements are made. The toilet rooms are in good condition and meet the required needs. Additional small toilet would improve use of day care center for staff. A new oil-fired boiler was recently installed by the County to serve the existing steam heat radiator system. Handicapped access was installed this year as well as new lighting and ceiling system in part of the building.
