Courtesy Review - Oakdale Woods Condominimums
(Town of Hillsborough )
c. Homestead Road Widening - Bike Lanes
Presentation by Greg Szymik .
At its August 17, 1987 meeting, the Planning
Board recommended to the Board of
Commissioners that NCDOT incorporate a bicycle
lane Into the proposed widening of Homestead
Road. In the minutes of that meeting,
Homestead Road was referenced as being widened
by five (5) feet, an action inconsistent with
the 1987-1988 Secondary Roads Improvement
Program. In that program, the project is
described as a two (2) foot widening. NCDOT
has verified the total widening to be two (2)
feet, not two (2) per lane. -
Homestead Road is presently 18 feet wide. The
proposed widening would provide 20 feet of
pavement for 2-10 foot lanes. The recommended
or " ideal " lane width is 12 feet. Homestead
Road, even after widening, will not have
sufficient width to incorporate a bike lane as
previously recommended by the Planning Board.
Planning Staff recommends that the Planning
Board recommend to the Board of Commissioners
that NCDOT Secondary Road Improvement projects
in urbanized areas be designed to include
provisions for bicycle use; i .e. , that bicycle
lanes of at least 3.5 feet in width be
installed as part of any widening project.
