' Yes X No ATTACHMENT(S ) : INFORMATION CONTACT: Greg Szymik NCDOT 1987-1988 Secondary Roads Improvements Program Draft 10-19-87 Planning Board Minutes TELEPHONE NUMBERS : Hillsborough - 732-8181 Durham - 688-7331 Mebane - 227-2031 Chapel Hill - 968-4501 PURPOSE : Consideration of a Planning Board request that the Board of Commissioners recommend to NCDOT that Secondary Roads Improvement projects be consistent with Bikeway Plans in urbanized areas in Orange County. BACKGROUND: The Secondary Roads Improvement Program for 1987-1988 includes a project to widen Homestead Road (SR 1777 ) . This prompted a question from the Orange County Planning Board about whether bike lanes were to be included in the widening and if not, whether they could be included in the project. While bike lanes are not proposed as part of the Homestead Road widening project, the question raises a valid concern about coordinating different types of transportation planning activities when transportation projects such as the widening of Homestead Road are developed . The Planning Board discussed this matter at its October 19, 1987 meeting . At that meeting, the Planning Board approved a motion recommending to the Board of Commissioners that NCDOT Secondary Road Improvements projects in urbanized areas be consistent with bikeway plans adopted by Chapel Hill and Carrboro. It is recommended that the Chair of the Board of Commissioners be authorized to make this recommendation to NCDOT. RECOMMENDATION : The Administration supports the Planning Board position and recommends that the Chair be authorized to recommend to NCDOT that Secondary Road Improvements projects in urbanized areas be consistent with bikeway plans adopted by the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
