Teer Company to <br /> has submitted a mining (rock quarry) <br /> permit t application ion to the North Carolina Department of Natural <br /> Resources and Community Development. As a component of the <br /> review process, NRCD conducted a public hearing on August 31, <br /> to solicit comments regarding the proposed rock quarry <br /> in Little River Township. <br /> 1987, All citizen comments encouraged <br /> NRCD to deny the mining permit. <br /> Discussions among citizens, NRCD officcia can <br /> ls and Nello Teer <br /> o <br /> representatives revealed the rock q eanione used as a <br /> public water supply/storage after mining P <br /> curtailed. In fact, the City of Durham plans to seDNello <br /> Teer existing quarry, scheduled to cease op <br /> County as a public water storage. Other information indicates <br /> the proposed quarry's capacity to store water would be <br /> that of Lake Mickie and City of Durham has already requested <br /> rights to the proposed quarry which would be located in both <br /> Orange and Durham Counties. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S) : <br /> Ask Manager to draft letter to Nello L. Teer Company and <br /> appropriate State agencies requ esting that if a quarry is <br /> have rights <br /> located in Little River Township, the County will op erigits <br /> to the quarry, for water storage, after the mining <br /> has been completed. <br />
