X. Make Announcements. Make a special effort to introduce the new manager <br /> to the department heads, employees, the press, and the community. <br /> Notify all of the unsuccessful applicants when the final selection has <br /> been made. A brief personal letter to each applicant informing him or <br /> her of the selection and thanking the applicant for expressing an <br /> interest in the position is appropriate. An applicant who was rated <br /> second this year and treated courteously may prove to be the most <br /> qualified applicant several years later. <br /> XI. Plan for Evaluation. When the manager reports for duty, immediately <br /> plan and schedule a formal evaluation of the manager in six months. <br /> The evaluation can be threatening, but it can be a mutual learning <br /> experience and can facilitate understanding and planning. The <br /> evaluation should be planned carefully with both parties suggesting <br /> topics. The focus should be present and future results not <br /> personality. The evaluation should be conducted in a closed meeting, <br /> but the news media should be briefed as to the purpose and the <br /> procedure followed. <br />
