2
agreement will be presented at the next Board of Commissioners' Meeting.
Don Willhoit announced that a summer social will be held on August 9,
1987 for Richard Whitted.
B. AUDIENCE COMMENTS
1. MATTERS ON THE PRINTED AGENDA
Those who have indicated a desire to speak will be recognized at
the appropriate time.
2 . MATTERS NOT ON THE PRINTED AGENDA
Several citizens appeared before the Board expressing concern
about day-care funding in Orange County.
Ernie Patterson read a statement which is in the permanent agenda
file. This statement gave statistics on day-care recipients and the
amount of money spent on day-care. He stated that Orange County will
receive $276, 000 from the state which is 50% of that needed for day-care
this year and leaves a $274, 000 deficit. He asked that the County Commis-
sioners budget the full amount requested by the Department of Social
Services or enough to continue funding the children now receiving
services.
Others who spoke of the need for day-care and asked that
additional funds be allocated were Nancy Yaeger (parent) , Helen (Cedar-
Grove Day-care Center, Rick Farrington (parent) , Patricia Holden (parent) ,
Carla (7-year old) and Carolyn Short (parent and student) .
A petition was presented with 682 signatures which stated "We the
undersigned believe that low income families should not be deprived of the
scholarship aid they need in order to continue in day care. Due to
recently announced drastic cutbacks of funds in our county, we petition
the Orange County Board of Commissioners to provide an emergency
contingency fund for children who would otherwise lose their day care now
