036
ORANGE COUNTY Action Agenda
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Item Ho.
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
MEETING DATE August 3, 1987
Subject: ORANGE COUNTY HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
Department: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Public Hearing: Yes X no
Attachments: Yes Information Contact:
Ltr. from Town of Chapel Hill Commissioner Moses Carey, Jr.
Phone fibers: 732-8181, 968-4501,
227-0231
PURPOSE: To expand the membership of the Orange County Human Relations Commission to
allow for participation from the municipalities.
BACKGROUND: The Orange County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution and charge
establishing a Human Relations Commission on June 16, 1987. The charge of the commission
encourages it to direct its attention to means of promoting tolerance for differences
among citizens in Orange County as well as receiving reports, initiating investigations and
recommending ways of eliminating insidious discrimination.
Since the adoption of the charge establishing the commission by the
Commissioners, the Town of Chapel Hill has expressed support for it and requested (see
attached letter) that the Town be allowed to participate in its formation. The
countywide focus of the commission suggests an invitation be extended to all Orange
County municipalities.
To accommodate the- participation of the individuals recommended by the
towns, the current seventeen ( 17) member commission can be expanded to twenty-three (23)
members. This would allow two persons to be recommended by each town (Hillsborough,
Chapel Hill and Carrboro) to serve on the commission. If the towns choose not to make
a recommendation, the Board of Commissioners may fill the seats from applications
submitted to the County.
RECOMMENDATION: To expand the membership of the Orange County Human Relations
Commission from 17 persons to 23 persons with two seats each reserved for persons
recommended by the towns of Hillsborough, Chapel Hill and Carrboro and authorize
the Chair to write letters requesting the Towns to make two recommendations to serve
on this commission.
