Pikes TELEPHONE NUMBER: Hillsborough - 732-8181 Chapel Hill - 968-4501 Mebane - 227-2031 Durham - 688-7331 PURPOSE: To establish public hearing dates to receive citizen and board comments regarding the potential submission of a Housing Demonstration Program Application. BACKGROUND: The Department of Natural Resources and Community Development (NRCD) in July 1987 announced the availability of funds for housing demonstration programs. This program is designed to en- courage innovative approaches to the housing problems of low and moderate income individuals. Eligible projects include: 1. Maintenance of Low and Moderate Income Housing; 2. Adaptive Reuse of Structures for Conversion to Low and Moderate Income Housing: 3. Self-Help Approaches to Housing Rehabilitation or Construction for Low and Moderate Income Persons. The deadline for applications is September 11, 1987. NRCD requires local governments to conduct a public hearing to obtain citizen's comments at the beginning of the application process and another hearing after the application is drafted but prior to the submission of the application to NRCD. There- fore, the Housing and Community Development Department would like to request that public hearing dates be set for August 18, 1987 and September 8, 1987 in order to facilitate citizen participation in the application process. Award of a Housing Demonstration Grant would provide Orange County with another program designed to improve the housing conditions of low and moderate income residents. RECOMMENDATION(S) : Establish August 18, 1987 and September 8, 1987 as public hearing dates to obtain citizen comments regarding the Housing Demonstration Grant application.
