03S
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action A nda
Item No.k$5
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date:
SUBJECT: Proposal for Public Education on Animal Control
DEPARTMENT: Health PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: X
ATTACHMENT(S) : Proposal INFORMATION CONTACT: Daniel Reimer
Elma Johnson
TELEPHONE NUMBER-
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-4501
Mebane - 227-2031
Durham -- 688-7331
PURPOSE: To consider authorization of the proposal for public education
on Animal Control and allocation of funding for the proposed
public education program.
BACKGROUND: -
On January 1 , 1988 , a new Animal Control Ordinance adopted by the County
Commissioners became 'effective in • Orange County. Subsequent to the
date the Ordinance became effective , changes in some of the provisions
of the Ordinance pertaining to licensure and fees were adopted by the
Commissioners. To promote public acceptance and compliance with the
provisions of the Ordinance on Animal Control , residents must be
accurately informed about the requirements of the Ordinance pertinent
to them. The attached proposal outlines a program of public education
and information which attempts to reach all residents of Orange County
who may own or care for animals. The proposed approaches involve heavy
use of mass media and print materials, which constitute the bulk of the
budget request for the proposal .
RECOMMENDATION(S) :
l.) Approve the Proposal for Public Education on Animal Control excluding,funding.
2) Manager will review funding and include a reduced amount in fiscal year 1988-89
Manager's recommended annual budget.
