C. <br /> General Statutes provides that any person who for, a <br /> price or fee, undertakes to bid upon, construct, <br /> superintend or manage, on his own behalf or for any <br /> person (who is not licensed as a general contractor) <br /> the construction of any building, highway, public <br /> utilities, grading or any improvement or structure <br /> where the cost is $30, 000 or more shall be considered <br /> to be a "general contractor". The section does, <br /> however, grant an exemption to any person who <br /> constructs a building on land owned by that person when <br /> the building is intended for use by that person after <br /> completion. The licensing of general contractors is <br /> performed by the N. C. General Contractors Licensing <br /> Board. <br /> A complaint involving an unlicensed contractor <br /> prompted the Inspections Division to seek a method for <br /> documenting exemptions granted under G. S. 87-1. <br /> person were granted such an exemption, and it was <br /> a <br /> subsequently found that he violated the provisions of <br /> G. S. 87-1, the matter could be referred to the N.C. <br /> General Contractors Licensing Board for appropriate <br /> action. <br />
