Shirley E. Marshall
Chair
Orange County Commissioners
106 East Margaret Lane
Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278
Dear Shirley:
I appreciate sending me the Orange County Board of
Commissioners resolution regarding regulations to control the
use of pesticides .
As you may know, the Congress intends to amend the Federal
Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) this year.
The Senate it currently marking up its version of the
amendments and the House is expected to take action on its
version (H.R. 2463) in the spring. There are provisions in
both bills to strengthen regulations and guidelines for
pesticide applicators as well as requiring the reregistration
of inadequately tested pesticides . Currently, there are no
provisions in either bill concerning aerial spraying of
pesticides . There are provisions within the bill to require
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect
groundwater from pesticide contamination and to use groundwater
residue guidance levels as a basis for protecting the
groundwater.
I appreciate having your input on this matter and will be
keeping your concerns in mind as FIFRA legislation progresses .
Again, thank you for writing. Please do not hesitate to
contact me regarding this or any other matter of concern.
Si erely,
1
DAVID PRICE
Member of Congress
DEP/mpc
l
