ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT ON AGING FUNDING PROPOSAL 065 <br /> 1 . AGENCY DESCRIPTION, PURPOSE, ETC. The Orange County <br /> Department on Aging is the central local resource for older <br /> citizens in terms of advocacy, planning, coordination, and <br /> information/service provision . It serves ALL persons 60 and <br /> older regardless of social, sexual , economic, physical, or <br /> racial/ethnic characteristics. Specific goals and <br /> objectives include: <br /> a) To provide Senior Centers where older persons may <br /> participate in activities, special events, classes, health <br /> promotions, and programs, and receive a variety of <br /> individual and group services. <br /> b) To maintain a wide-ranging resource directory and <br /> contact list for prompt and accurate response to inquiries <br /> about many subjects of interest and concern . <br /> c) To provide supportive services for those needing <br /> assistance to remain in their own homes. <br /> d) To provide access to services and activities where <br /> no transportation exists. <br /> • <br /> e) To promote and facilitate volunteer opportunities <br /> both as a means of enriching life for older persons and for <br /> improving the quality of the community. <br /> f) To serve as advocate for those dealing with red <br /> tape, consumer problems, bureaucratic snarls, etc. <br /> g) To work with other public and private agencies and <br /> organizations in planning, coordination and promotion to <br /> avoid duplication or overlap. <br /> h) To cooperate with those groups in a continuing <br /> assessment of needs to identify and advocate for new or <br /> expanded services . <br /> 2 . CURRENT PROGRAMS ADDRESSING VISITOR INFORMATION <br /> SERVICES. The Department 's Information and Referral service <br /> responds to information requests on locally available <br /> services, resources, and opportunities . This is <br /> accomplished indirectly (by supplying materials and/or <br /> information to other agencies or groups) or directly to <br /> inquirers. Persons in California or Connecticut (for <br /> example) often first contact their own state aging office. <br /> They are referred to the N.C . Division of Aging or the Area <br /> Aging Agency (Triangle J COG) which in turn refers them to <br /> the Orange County Department on Aging. <br />
