056
1 . Agency Description
The Orange County Department on Aging is the central County
resource functioning on behalf of older citizens in terms of
advocacy, planning, coordination and information along with
providing direct services. It is committed to serving the
elderly, irrespective social, sex, financial or ethnic origin.
This department is unique in that no Other County agency, public
or private, has this function.
The Orange County Department on Aging has been designated as a
Focal Point Agency for information, resources, and services which
contribute to wellness and better quality of life for older
adults. This designation has been made by the Triangle J Council
of Governments. Program offerings include an information referral
service for visitors and newcomers, and a distribution center for
the Silver Savers Discount Card. The Center offers many arts
courses, field trips and outings to cultural events.
2 . Specific Proposal
The Saturday School for Senior Citizens
Program Description
A. The Saturday School for Senior Citizens program is an attempt
to identify and meet the educational needs of senior citizens
in the Chapel Hill area and provide an opportunity for social
interaction among program participants . Special interest
classes are offered for senior citizens on Saturday mornings
at Phillips Junior High School, and refreshments are served
during a break in classes.
B. The purpose of the program is to enrich the lives of the
senior citizen population of Chapel Hill: to provide
high-quality programs at a low cost, to meet the demands,
interests, and needs of this population, and to offer an
opportunity to develop friendships among participants.
C. Program innovations include:
--A concerted planning effort involving all the participating
agencies (Orange County Department on Aging, Chapel Hill
Parks and Recreation, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools)
--Providing classes in the morning hours, which is a more
attractive time for many senior citizens than the typical
evening hours program;
--Making the school site available to senior citizens, and
gearing the classes specifically to the senior learner,
thereby minimizing any feelings of intimidation senior
citizens may have about taking classes with younger
students.
1
