In its WHM activities, the Orange County (NC)
Commission for Women (OCCW) pays special attention to bringing the
message of the role women have in history to young women in the
county public schools. The theme of OCCW' s celebration of WHM is
that history is made just one day at a time and that local, unsung
heroines are just as important as women of wider fame.
PROBLEM/CONCERN:
History gives us the perspective to handle today and tomorrow.
Without it, we have no basis, no tradition, no experiences on which
to build. The specific inclusion of women (and other minorities) in
our collective history gives young women that solid basis. Older
women realize that famous women made their names through hard work,
luck and opportunity combined, in increments not particularly
noteworthy.
This day-to-day path towards history is most difficult to grasp
when young, since every moment seems like forever . And, although
young people have their heroines, the road between self and admired
may seem impossible or unknown. The problem: how to celebrate
Women' s History Month and be certain the young women of Orange
County are included in the celebration in a way that lets them know
that they, too, are making history, one day at a time?
SOLUTION:
s
An ad hoc WHM Committee of the Commission was formed. Then members
came from both the northern and southern p s
natural geographic and residential division 'requires attention to
geographic representation on the Commission and its committees) .
All had children or relatives in one of the county' s pubic
or had attended a school themselves. They contacted teachers,
guidance counselors and/or principals they knew in the two senior
high schools and asked them Commission a panel
of local heroines to th
positively.
/71
