•
For the purpose of this study, major thoroughfares are classified into three
groups: radials, loops, and connecting streets. The Recommended Plan has all of
these type of streets.
As the suburban area expands outwardly, the existing radial major thoroughfares
into a town will become congested. Consequently, these thoroughfares in the
existing plans have been extended to the study area borders. Examples include,
Roxboro Road, Guess Road. and NC 55. The Alston Avenue/Old Oxford Road/Hamlin
Road connector is an additional northeast radial designed to help relieve the
northern link of I-85 and Roxboro Street. The Liberty Street radial is proposed
to be extended east of US 70. This will allow Liberty Street/Holloway Street to
become a one-way pair. This one-way pair will help relieve the Holloway Street
congestion around Joyland that has been a problem for years.
The plan includes a series of loop-road systems designed to move traffic around
the city. Eno Drive and the Northern Durham Freeway are prime examples of this
type of facility. A new loop in southern Durham County, the NC 751/Scott King
Road/Hopson Road/Page Road Connector, is proposed to reach from Research
Triangle Park through southern Durham County, and end at NC 54 east of NC 54/I-40
interchange. Projected residential areas will be served by this loop. Leesville
Road is proposed to be realigned to connect with Page Road at US 70. Once this
system is completed, traffic will very efficiently move from eastern Durham County
to Research Triangle Park and I-40. The Pleasant Green Road/Cornwallis Road loop
is another addition. It is will provide a connection northwest Durham County,
Hillsborough and south Durham.
The third class of major thoroughfares are the connecting streets. For example,
Bivens Road, north of Umstead Road, connects northern Durham County with Hillsbo-
rough. The Ellis Road Extension will connect east Durham County with Research
Triangle Park, and Erwin Road will provide an alternate route from west Durham to
Chapel Hill.
Minor thoroughfares are streets that do not carry the large traffic volumes of
major thoroughfares, yet they provide a benefit to the circulation of the Urban
Area. Barbee Road, Grandale Drive, and Sedwick Road are designated as minor
thoroughfares to provide circulation around Parkwood and surrounding residential
areas in the vicinity of NC 54. University Station Road, Turkey Farm Road and
Kerley Road also will provide access to new residential developments in the Duke
Forest area. A connector. between Doc Nichols Road and Kemp Road would allow
those roads to provide improved land access service in southeast Durham County.
•
5.7
