Northeast Spur:
Reaching northward from the Northern Durham Freeway, a spur freeway is
shown through the proposed Treyburn development, extending beyond Bahama
to connect directly to US 501 near Quail Roost. The primary purpose of this
concept is to provide direct access to Treyburn's major employment areas,
while also providing relief to US 501 North of Durham. Coupled with the
other portions of the Durham Outer Loop system, these regional improvements
would provide the backbone of an well-designed highway system whose
traffic-carrying efficiency and safety characteristics were optimized.
Durham Freeway Extension to Cary:
Within the next few years, the southern expansion of the Research Triangle
Park is expected to double the employment in the Park. This will require
the extension of the Durham Freeway southward from 1-40 southward to the
Northern Wake Freeway and into Cary. Triangle residents will gain access
into this new area via the existing Durham Freeway and I-40.
I-40 Interchange at Farrington Road:
An additional interchange to I-40 is proposed at Farrington Road. The
interchange is proposed to provide another access point to the interstate
between Durham and Chapel Hill/Carrboro. This is included to help relieve
the other interchanges that are expected to become congested (NC 54 and US
15/501 interchanges in particular) and it is expected to access the
residential property in the Farrington Road area.
Whitfield Road:
Whitfield Road has been proposed to be designated as a thoroughfare,
reflecting anticipated traffic use. Whitfield Road will provide local traffic
with a parallel route to I-40, and provide direct access to the Mt. Moriah,
Road intersection with 15-501.
Embanks Road:
Eubanks Road will provide traffic generated by anticipated development to
the west and south with direct access to 1-40. A connection between
Bethel-Hickory Grove Church Road and Eubanks Road northwest of Carrboro
will provide a direct link from NC 54 west of Carrboro and the I-40
interchange at NC 86. This will reduce traffic on NC 54 and through
Carrboro and Chapel Hill as it diverts traffic heading to I-40 form those
areas. This new thoroughfare will eliminate the need for the connection
between Hatch Road and the Homestead extension near Calvander.
5.6
