Southern Parkway:
Alignment has been shifted in the Research Triangle Park vicinity. Develop-
ment in the park has made the old alignment Impossible to build. The
alignment is now proposed to tie into Cornwallis Road west of the Durham
Freeway at Alexander Drive. East Alexander Drive is being extended from
Miami Boulevard to US 70 as part of the Southern Parkway project. A private
developer and NCDOT are working on this as a joint project..
Revisions to the Adopted Chapel. Hhl ' arrboro Thoroughfare Plans
Lammed Hill Parksmun
The Laurel Hill Parkway, between NC 54 and Ephesus Church Road will be
realigned to provide more direct access to 15-501. Recommended changes to
the Durham Thoroughfare Plan will result in the creation of a more efficient
loop for traffic moving around the edge of Chapel Hill. The recommended
addition of an interchange at Farrington/I-40 will allow traffic destined for
the University area to avoid the anticipated congestion along NC 86. It will
also allow traffic a more direct route to northern Chatham County.
Northern Chatham Loop:
Although the Northern Chatham Loop, utilizing Lystra Road (SR 1721) was
included as part of the 1983 Chapel Hill-Carrboro Thoroughfare Plan further
analysis of the adopted alignment was necessary. The proposed modification
includes the use of Jack Bennett Road (SR 1717) and a realignment of the
proposed new roadway section. The proposed change will result in a more
efficient route for anticipated traffic from Northern Chatham County.
Increased residential development in Northern Chatham has created the need
for a more direct route to 1-40 and employment centers in the RTP/Airport
area. The proposed change will divert more traffic from 15-501 South,
relieving some pressure on the 15-501 Bypass and Laurel Hill Parkway.
Farrington Road:
With the ' proposed realignment of the Laurel Hill Parkway. the opportunity
exists to deemphasize Farrington Road as a principle thoroughfare. The close
proximity of the Farrington/NC 54, intersection to the NC54/I-40 intersection
limits the ability of Farrington Road to efficiently accommodate the
anticipated traffic moving north and south between NC54 and ',15-501.
Near University Lake:
The connection between Hatch Road and the Homestead Road extension near
Calvander has been eliminated. A proposed new thoroughfare, a connection
between Bethel-Hickory Grove Church Road and Eubanks Road northwest of
Carrboro will provide a direct link from NC 54 west of Carrboro and the I-40
interchange at NC 86 and eliminate the need for the Hatch-Homestead
connection.
5.4
