Farrington Road at I-40:
The proposed future interchange of I-40 with Farrington Road is seen by
residents of the area to be a threat to the low density rural quality of the
residential area. As discussed in the Recommended Plan section of this
report, it is anticipated that an additional access point to I-40 between
Durham and Chapel Hill will be needed to relieve congestion at the NC 54 and
the US 15-501 interchanges. Also, development and density in the Farrington
Road area is increasing rapidly. This new traffic will require access to I-40.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities:
Sidewalks and bikeways were proposed by many citizens as environmentally
compatible transportation alternatives.
Proposed University of North Carolina Roadway Changes:
A number of thoroughfare changes have been proposed by the University of
North Carolina as part of their recently developed Draft Land Use Plan. At
the time of this revision to the Chapel Hill Thoroughfare Plan there had not
yet been final approval of the UNC Land Use Plan and its related thorough-
fare changes by the University Board of Trustees. The Town has begun the
process of analyzing the effects of the proposed University thoroughfare
changes on the overall thoroughfare system. At such time as any
revisions to the thoroughfare system related to the proposed land use plan
are approved, they will be considered for inclusion in the Durham-Chapel
Hill-Carrboro Thoroughfare Plan revision.
4.10
