Though the construction of I-40 provides a much-improved highway system for
southwest Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, some problems are expected. Since
that freeway has relatively few interchanges to serve large areas along its
length, access at those few points is anticipated to become increasingly congested
with time. Though additional access points are projected to be necessary, every
interchange along the I-40 corridor may be the subject of intense development
pressure for many years in the future, particularly proposed ones serving
presently rural areas.
Adjustments To The Adapted mare Plans1
Several of the thoroughfares included in Durham's 1980 Thoroughfare Plan and the
1984 Chapel Hill-Carrboro Plan have had minor adjustments in alignment in
response to changes in land use, environmental or social concerns, or to accommo-
date development in a more efficient manner. These revisions in the adopted plans
include:
South Roxboro Street Extension - through Hope Valley Farms
Southern Parkway - NC 55 to Alexander Drive
Obie Drive - Removed from plan
Briggs Avenue Extension - section south of Ellis Road removed from plan
Cornwallis-Lynn Connector - Riddle Rd. to US 70
Eno Drive - NC 98 to US 70 , and Hillandale Rd. to 1-85
Lynn Road - NC 98 to Cheek Rd.
Alston Avenue Extension - I-85 to Old Oxford Highway
Camden Avenue - removed from plan
•
Carver Street Extension - Roxboro Street to Old Oxford Highway
NC 54-Homestead Road Connector - removed from plan and replaced by
Bethel Hickory Grove Church Rd.-Eubanks Rd. Connector.
1 The revisions are described in the Recommended Plan section of this report.
4.2
