Ward, Vice-Chair; <br /> Virginia Boland; Charles H. Burger; Dwight Compton; James R. Dingfelder; Kani Hurow <br /> Doris Murrell; David Smudski; Charles Snipes; Susan Waldrop; Stephen H. Halkiotis. <br /> STAFF PRESENT: (Underline) Mary Anne Black, Director; Robert A. Jones, Jr., <br /> Northern District Supervisor; Lynn T. Hecht, Western District Supervisor; <br /> Wilma K. Tinney, Southern District Supervisor; Timothy M. Lutenski, Central <br /> District Supervisor; Kristi G. Scully,' Senior Citizens Coordinator; and <br /> Patricia B. Lloyd, Administrative Secretary. <br /> GUEST(S) PRESENT: Mr. & Mrs. Dave Swanson <br /> The Orange County Recreation & Parks Advisory Council met at the Cane Creek Hunting <br /> Lodge for their January meeting. Chair PARKER called the meeting to order with 6 <br /> members, 4 staff persons, and 2 guests present. Due to lack of a quorum, the <br /> December minutes were not approved. Director BLACK distributed copies of various <br /> news articles and asked the Council to discuss these articles. <br /> Chair PARKER asked for additions to agenda. BLACK asked to discuss 5C as the next <br /> item of business and to table 7C - Shadow Lake Subdivision. BURGER asked to make <br /> comments concerning maintenance " on facilities. SMUDSKI asked to add the <br /> . Hillsborough Christmas Parade. <br /> PARKER then introduced Kristi Scully, Senior Citizens Coordinator. She and Wilma <br /> Tinney, Southern District Supervisor, passed out brochures and informational <br /> handouts about Senior Games. Wilma then gave an overview of Senior Games and <br /> stated that the first Senior Games for Orange County would be held in May 1988. She <br /> told of various events and dates for same. She reported that Orange County, Chapel <br /> Hill, Carrboro, Department on Aging, and the University of North Carolina are the <br /> lead agencies coordinating the events. <br /> Kristi then presented a brief, but very informative presentation on the Senior <br /> Games. She said that the Senior Games is a very well organized group. The main <br /> sponsors are NCNB, Blue Cross Blue Shield, APO, Duke Power, Marion Labatories, <br /> Basnight Electric, Pizza Hut, Hotel Europa, and Coca-Cola. She said a bowling <br /> group and an older adult swimming club has been formed. - Plans for the future <br /> include horseshoe competition as well. Upcoming special events include: February <br /> - indoor games party, basketball shooting, and walking; March - Training clinics in <br /> Hillsborough and Chapel Hill (there will be a trainer from UNC to speak); April - <br /> Senior Games Day in Park - "dry run" for May event. Promotional event for Senior <br /> Games with a torch run and big opening ceremonies. <br /> Director BLACK stated that the Senior Games is one of the biggest events for Orange <br /> County and .that the Board of County Commissioners has given $800 for this event. <br /> _ --- Director BLACK then introduced Dave Swanson'of Bunter, Reynolds, & Jewell and his <br /> wife. Mt. Swanson is doing Durham County's open space inventory. BLACK then gave . <br /> a. brief summary of the Master Park Plan to bring members and guests up to date on <br /> happenings and revisions. <br /> BLACK then presented the basis of a re-defined Greenway System by-showing maps with <br /> various overlays for greenways, flood plains, natural corridors, etc. - Much <br /> discussion followed. <br />
