-2- <br /> 006 <br /> Orange County has eight volunteer fire departments. These departments <br /> answered the following number of calls: <br /> 1983 1984 1985 1986 <br /> 681 527 823 689 <br /> - If the Orange County Board of Commissioners decided to approve <br /> a fire marshal position, it appears that combining the position with <br /> other roles and responsibilities would be most cost effective to <br /> the county. The following are roles and responsibilities that this <br /> position might include: <br /> 1. Attends meetings and serves on committees, boards and agencies <br /> related to promoting fire prevention and improving fire suppression. <br /> 2. Acts as liaison between the existing and potential volunteer <br /> fire departments and the Board of County Commissioners and other <br /> county agencies. <br /> 3. Keeps the Board of County Commissioners informed of any matters <br /> pertaining to the present and future expansion of rural fire departments. <br /> 4. Assists volunteer fire departments in planning and developing <br /> training programs. <br /> 5. Coordinates fire prevention inspections of schools, day care <br /> centers, foster homes, nursing homes, residential care facilities <br /> and other facilities open to the public. <br /> 6. Assists fire departments and schools in organizing and implementing <br /> fire prevention programs. <br /> 7. Assists fire departments in obtaining proper equipment. <br /> 8. Makes periodic inspections of all fire departments to see that <br /> they conform to standards of the North Carolina Fire Rating Bureau. <br /> 9. Assists in the investigations of fires of suspicious nature <br /> so as to determine their cause. <br /> 10. Assists fire departments in a fire prevention program in their <br /> respective districts. <br /> 11. Assists in developing and implementation of County fire prevention <br /> codes. <br /> 12. Assists fire departments in developing the annual budget proposals <br /> to be presented to the Board of County Commissioners. <br />
