029 <br /> ORANGE <br /> COUNTY <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> WHEREAS, on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the <br /> United States was ratified; and <br /> WHEREAS, that amendment reads as follows: <br /> "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not <br /> :be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state <br /> on account of sex."; and <br /> WHEREAS, the power of the vote is the gateway to continued improvements in <br /> the status of women; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Orange County Commission for Women advises the citizens and <br /> Board of Commissioners of Orange County of the status of women in Orange <br /> County; and <br /> WHEREAS, that status remains unequal, especially economically and politically; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, yet women make significant contributions economical) <br /> and in myriad ways to Orange County. <br /> economically, politically <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim <br /> Wednesday, August 26, 1987 as <br /> WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY <br /> in celebration of women's contributions and their right to economic and <br /> political equality and do hereby urge all citizens to work to guarantee full <br /> equality for all women. <br /> This the 18th day of August, 1987. <br /> Shirley Marshall <br /> Chair, Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> Orange County Commission for Women • 131 Court Street • Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br /> Hillsborough: 732-8181 • Chapel Hill: 967-9251 • Mebane: 227-2031 • Durham: 688-7331 <br />
