cd©Qq <br /> ; oY DURyq CITY OF DURHAM <br /> a 18 B9 a <br /> NORTH CAROLINA <br /> �aR��Q OFFICE OF <br /> MAYOR E.J.EVANS <br /> WHEREAS, during the last 50 years, the City has author- <br /> ized a number of engineering surveys and reports on possible <br /> sources of water; the City has paid half the cost of operating <br /> stream gaging stations on the Flat, Eno and Little Rivers and <br /> their tributaries in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, <br /> in order to have adequate information on which to base future <br /> water supplies; the laboratory staff of the City has analyzed <br /> thousands of samples from these rivers in order to have adequate <br /> information on water quality, and all of these studies positively <br /> confirm that future water supplies for this City and area must <br /> be developed on the Flat, Eno and Little Rivers,_ and that they <br /> must be protected for that purpose; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> DURHAM: <br /> 1 . That the recitals hereinabove stated are hereby found <br /> as facts. <br /> 2 . That the State Stream Sanitation Committee is hereby <br /> respectfully requested to reclassify the Eno River and the Little <br /> River and their tributaries from their sources to points of dis- <br /> charge at Neuse River and Eno River respectively as "A-II" <br /> ("suitable as a source of water supply for drinking, culinary, <br /> or food processing purposes after treatment by approved disin- <br /> fection only, and any other usage requiring waters of lower <br /> quality") . <br /> 3 . That the City Clerk be,and she is hereby, directed to <br /> transmit certified copies of this resolution to the State Stream <br /> Sanitation Committee in Raleigh, North Carolina." <br /> This Resolution was transmitted to the State Stream Sanitation Committee, <br /> together with a letter requesting appropriate action. <br /> The City was advised by Mr. E. C. Hubbard, Director, Division of Stream <br /> Sanitation and Hydrology, that the State Board of Health must approve all sources <br /> of public water supply. On June 12, 1962, the City requested Mr. j. M. Jarrett, <br /> Director, Sanitary Engineering Division, State Board of Health, for approval of the <br /> Eno and Little Rivers as a source of municipal water supply. The City received a <br /> copy of a letter from Mr. Jarrett to Mr. Hubbard, dated September 18, 1962, as <br /> follows: <br /> -2- <br />
