Rt. 5 Box 110-109
Ridgewood Mobile Home Park
Chapel Hill , NC 27514
May 20, 1987
Shirley Marshall , Chair
Orange County Commissioners
106 E. Margaret Lane
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Ms. Marshall :
Through my support of such national environmental organizations such as
Defenders of Wildlife, National Wildlife Association and the like, 1 naively
thought the Steel-Jaw Leghold Trap was a Western problem which all Americans
should be concerned about.
Now I am_: shocked to learn that this cowardly, brutal and despicable method
of "entrapment" is used in Orange County, North Carolina. I honestly thought
the leghold trap was banned years ago in eastern states.
You don' t need to be reminded of the agonizing death caused by such traps,
as you know there is no quick "painless" death to the animal or bird caught
thusly. To think that a wandering child could stumble into such horror is of
a magnitude beyond the thinking of a civilized person. That, fortunately, has
not happened in Orange County, but many domestic pets in this county have been
caught in the leghold trap and have suffered needlessly--often losing a limb.
I support the ban on Steel-Jaw Leghold Traps in Orange County, indeed I
would like to see their ban throughout North Carolina.
I urge you and your fellow commissioners to approve that section of the
ordinance banning the use of leghold traps in Orange County.
I would also urge the County Commissioners to ban their sale in Orange
County and to encourage an educational program among hunters and trappers and in
the school systems as to the barbarism of this method of entrapment. Such educa-
tional programs in the form of literature, video tapes, : photos are available from
many national wildlife organizations.
S. cerely yours,
/
(Mrs. ) Carroll C. Carrozz/I
