north caroling humane federation
OFFICE OF THE DIRECTORS
Shirley Marshall , Chair
Board of Commissioners of Orange County
106 E. Margaret Lane
Hillsborough , North Carolina
Dear Ms. Marshall :
I would like to commend the Orange County Commissioners for
approaching the problem of animal control by appointing a Task
Force . The recommendations from this group will give Orange
County a means of dealino with problems that are plaguing most
areas of the North Carolina. These are problems that require
hard decisions and commitment to accomplish the goal of effective
animal control .
The North Carolina Humane Federation especially urges Orange
County to pass the ban on steel jaw traps. These inhumane de-
vices are illegal in over 60 countries, and the_ issue is being
considered county-by-county and state-by-state in the United
States. Along with the inhumanity toward the animals being
sought by trappers, nontarget animals are also victimized.
Again , with North Carolina population boom, it's past time to ban
these traps, both for animals' concerns and for public health and
safety.
Sincerely,
athryn McCray-Smith May 23, 1987
Presi dent
