Rt. 4, Box 1518
Hillsborough, N. C. 27278
May 23, 1987
Orange County Board of Commissioners
Hillsborough, N. C. 27278
Dear County Commissioner:
I'm writing you this letter in opposition to Section XII of
the Proposed Animal Control Ordinance.
I understnad from reading this section that this Ordinance
would prohibit the use of steel jaw traps in Orange County, except
by use of a special depridation permit. The problem with tnis is
that the farmer or other party applying for a permit has already let
the wild animal , Predator or Rodent, overpopulate before such party
applies. This leads to great financial loss in grain crops, damage
to farm ponds, damage to timber flooding of pastures, etc.
Another great problem with overpopulations is the increased chance
of disease carried by wild animals ; the most deadly of which is
Rabies, which will kill domestic animals, dogs, cats, livestock,
as well as humans.
Orange County and especially the farmers need the annual
season for trapping as set and regulated by our Wildlife Commission.
We need this annual season for trapping so that these animals will
not overpopulate and cause more and more problems listed above.
We have eighteen Wildlife Biologists employed by North Carolina
Wildlife who do studies and make biologically sound reports to the
Commission. From these reports and recommendations the Wildlife
Commission sets regulations as to season limits so we will have
healthy populations, hopefully eliminating depridation and disease.
The Commission also sets firm and adequate regulations
regarding humanemethods of trapping.
I personally trap on an annual basis for several farmers and
cattlemen in northern Orange County, and I have a good working
relationship with all the people for whom I trap.
Please beware of Emotional anti-trapping proposals based on
sympathy with no biological facts to substantiate their proposal.
It is very untrue that competent trappers are inhumaneand catbh
large numbers of non-target animals. In fact, it is to the contrary.
I ask you to use Section XXIII - Severability and sever Section XII
from this Ordinance and leave trapping regulations in the hand of the
North Carolina Wildlife Commission where it belongs.
Sincerely,
' 16v _ b'
Gilbert B. Petty
P. 5. Enclosed are the State Regulations set by North Carolina 4ildlife.
