Here's How to Use the HSUS
Trapping Awareness Kit
The HSUS thanks you for offering to help spread the word about the
tragic consequences of buying furs. The contents of this kit should enable
you—working on your own or with the assistance of others—to begin an
anti-trapping campaign in your community. Here are some suggested ways
to use the materials enclosed.
Inside, you'll find 10 camera-ready advertisements (5 each of a coyote
and badger) that can be placed in local newspapers. We suggest that you
meet with the publishers or managing editors of papers in your area and try
to convince them that they would be providing a public service by running the
ads free of charge. (Remember, however, newspapers are not required to run
public service information.)
If this approach fails, try enlisting several local businesses or civic leaders
to cosponsor the ad, running their names at the bottom of the message.
(The Humane Society of the United States grants permission for you to
add your name or that of your animal-welfare organization to the
advertisement. If, however, you want to run the names of commercial firms
who may have purchased the ad space for you, you must obtain permission
from The HSUS. Write: Permissions, The Humane Society of the United States,
2100 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037. Please include names and brief
descriptions of commercial firms. We would greatly appreciate receiving a
copy of any ad you successfully place.)
You might also want to make photocopies of the advertisements and use
them as mini-posters. As with the two larger posters inside this packet, obtain
permission to hang them in community centers, libraries, schools, local
businesses, or wherever you think they might draw public attention. Also, use
photocopies as hand-outs when attending anti-fur demonstrations or rallies of
any sort. Have them on hand if you set up displays or man anti-trapping
booths at rallies, shopping malls, county fairs, or schools. Ask your friends to
wear the enclosed "Every Fur Coat Hurts" decals at demonstrations and
other functions, and adhere them to car windows or bumpers.
The Close-Up Reports and "Trapped Animals" pamphlets (you'll find 5
of each in the packet) are excellent vehicles to educate the press, friends,
neighbors, club members, etc. If you wish to use them as hand-outs,
additional copies can be obtained in quantities by completing the enclosed
order blank.
You may want to refer to the sample letter to the editor when writing to
area papers to express your opposition to trapping. Be sure to add any
personal feelings, experiences, or comments that would be of particular
interest to individuals in your community.
(OVER)
