C . 27514
Dear Shirley,
As a member of the Board of Directors for the Orange County
Animal Protection Society, I would like to urge you to support
the ban of leghold traps in Orange County. This is one of the
recommendations being put forth by the "Animal Control Task
Force" appointed by the Commissioners back in March.
I have heard horror stories about what can happen to family
pets, and other unsuspecting animals that get caught in these
traps. To tell you the truth, I was surprised to learn that
they were still in use here in. Orange County. Our research
tells us that of the 22 million animals trapped in the United
States each year, more than 5 million are "Yiontarget" animals,
or animals that were not meant to be trapped. This, to me,
seems a terrible way for any animal to suffer, and there must
be more humane ways for trappers to go about their business .
This is an excellent opportunity to ban the steel-jawed leghold
trap forever in Orange County, and I hope you will consider my
letter, and the signatures of all the citizens on the attached
petitions as evidence of the support behind this idea.
I will see you at the Public Hearing on Tuesday, May 26, 1987.
Thank you.
Ilfr , =lards, as always,
jr
Ron Stutts
Village Broadcasting Company, Inc. • P.O.
