June 8, 1987
Shirley Marshall , Chair
Orange Co. Board of Commissioners
106 E. Margaret Ln.
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Chair Marshall : 65j)
 w()
I write to reiterate my support of the ban in Orange County of the
steel jaw leghold trap.
If those members of our county heretofore using the leghold trap
could use help in changing long held habits, please work to facilitate
the use of alternative forms of traps and instruction in their humane
use. An individual at the May 26th hearing testified that the Animal
Protection Society is willing to assist anyone wanting to use the
Have-A-Heart Trap. Let us encourage cooperation among the interested
parties. The use of the steel jaw leghold trap is one tradition too
barbaric to condone. It is my impression that the terms of the proposed
ordinance do not strongly enough prohibit use of this device.
I would like to add that other portions of the proposed Animal
Control Ordinance appear to be sound; in particular, the imposition of
higher licensing fees for un-neutered and unspayed dogs and cats in
Orange County is good policy.
Thank you for your serious consideration of the proposed Animal
Control Ordinance for Orange County and for your attentiveness to all
speakers during the hearing on May 26th.
S' rely,
Marg P. Heath
405 estwood Dr.
Chapel Hill , NC 27514
