-Es%
ACTION ALERT ACTION ALERT
NIT' ,y im
Dear North Carolina Friends: May 1987
We need your help to end the use of the cruel steel jaw trap in
Orange County! Pending before the County Commission right now is
an ordinance which would ban the use of this barbaric device. A
public hearing was held on the issue May 26 and a vote is
scheduled June 16. Dr. John Grandy, Vice President of Wildlife
and Environment, presented testimony at the hearing and explained
our opposition to the use of this trap.
PLEASE CONTACT THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE COUNTY COMMISSION RIGHT
AWAY AND EXPRESS YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE COUNTY ORDINANCE TO BAN THE
USE- OF---THE -STEEL. JAW IEGHOLD TRAP IN ORANGE COUNTY. Unless the
voices of Orange County residents are heard loud and clear in
support of the proposed ban, the suffering of many animals will
continue.
The Chairperson can be reached at the following address: Auu„. Aka ,
Shirley Marshall, Chairperson J -1-t -:ArF1"1
Orange County Board of Commissioners e
106 East Margaret Lane ♦' - .-
Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278
967-9251 Q
ff
Call or write Chairperson Marshall right away. You can make any
or all of the following points:
--These traps cause much pain and suffering for animals. When a
trap closes, it is similar to a car door slamming shut on a human
hand.
--Many nontarget animals--such as pets--are caught in them.
--They are a danger - to small children.
--Trapping does not help control rabies, and may actually fuel
outbreaks by removing animals that have acquired a natural
immunity to the virus.
--Several states and counties have legislated against the steel
jaw trap already. Let 's make Orange County one of the leaders in
humane treatment of animals!
If you have any questions, please contact me or Dr. John Grandy
at (202)452-1100.
Si` 1 ,
Ann Church
Coordinator, State Legislation
The Humane Society of the United States • 2100 L Street, NW • Washington, DC 20037
