r .
June 5, 1987
Dear County Commissioner Marshall:
We have been residing in Orange County for the past
20 years. Ten of them were spent off 86 near Black-
wood Station and ten in Chapel Hill.
We are very concerned about the plight of humans and
animals due to overpopulation of both groups.
The steel jaw leg hold trap mains and kills thousands
of animals per year. It is only a matter of time be-
fore a child get caught in one of these traps, hurting
himself dreadfully and perhaps for life, which could
ultimately result in a suit against the County and the
burning question "Why hasn't anything been done about
this before?"
Non trappers, Mr. and Ms average Orange County citizen,
consider this trap the equivalentcf a medieval torture
device. We have no lobby to help us but you represent
all of us and we know that you will consider our point
of view.
A strong argument against the trap is that an alterna-
tive trap is available enabling those animals not de-
sired for their fur to be released intact.
We urge you to pass in toto the proposed Orange County
Animal Control Ordinance and not to delete the steel
jaw leg hold trap section.
Duplin County has banned this device.
With kind rega s,
v V: -
4I
