11 <br /> OO8 <br /> GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA <br /> SESSION 1987 <br /> 1 <br /> S <br /> SENATE BILL 58 <br /> Short Title: Transportation Assistance Program. <br /> (Public) <br /> Sponsors: Senators Hunt of Moore; Barnes, Goldston, Guy, Hardison, <br /> Harrington, Harris, Hipps, Johnson of Wake, Plyler, Rand, Rauch, <br /> Redman, Richardson, Seymour, Tally, Walker, Ward, Warren, Winner. <br /> Referred to: Veterans Affairs and Senior Citizens. <br /> February 23, 1987 <br /> 1 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED <br /> 2 AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR AN ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED <br /> 3 TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM TO BE ADMINISTERED BY <br /> 4 THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. <br /> 5 Whereas, the work of the Governor's Committee on Rural Public <br /> 6 Transportation in 1978 resulted in a State policy emphasizing coordination and use of <br /> 7 private sector resources in providing improved transportation services in rural areas; <br /> 8 and <br /> 9 Whereas, countywide transportation development planning is a statewide <br /> 10 effort that is intended to coordinate human service transportation services and <br /> 11 improve cost efficiency; and <br /> 12 Whereas, the Interagency Transportation Review Committee currently <br /> 13 reviews all requests for transportation funds administered by State government to <br /> 14 determine whether they are consistent with county transportation development plans; <br /> 15 and <br /> 16 Whereas, the Department of Transportation presently administers federal <br /> • 17 programs that provide funds for planning, capital improvement, administration, and <br /> - 18 operating expenses for human service transportation services, including transportation <br /> • 19 for the elderly and the handicapped; and <br />
