UNC Chapel Hill Permit
PART III - STORAGE/TREATMENT IN CONTAINERS
The Hazardous Materials Facility(HMF) is located northwest of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill main campus and consists of Building 488 and Building 531. Figures and text in Part D of
the Application provide detailed information on the HMF.
Building 488
Approximately 50 feet by 36 feet, Building 488 is a concrete block building with an epoxy coated
concrete floor. Hazardous wastes are inventoried, treated, and/or consolidated in Building 488.
Treatment consists of bulking or elementary neutralization. Waste consolidation is also achieved by
labpacking. The raised sill floor system in the Consolidation Room provides for 507 gallons of
secondary containment. Two 55-gallon drums are used for waste solvent bulking. The neutralization
process limit is 30 gallons per day. Shelves with containment pans provide a maximum storage capacity
of 320 gallons for wastes to be labpacked. The floor plan provides for up to eighteen 55-gallon labpack
drums in the Consolidation Room.
Building 531
Approximately 65 feet by 40 feet, Building 531 is a pre-engineered steel structure on an epoxy coated
concrete floor with perimeter curbing. Hazardous and mixed waste storage areas in Building 531 consist
of a flammable waste storage room in the northwest corner, seven separate small storage bays on the
north side of the building, and two separate large storage bays on the south side of the building. The
volume of the largest container is 55 gallons. No more than 75 compressed gas cylinders are stored in
the southwest corner of building 531.
The dimensions and capacities of the Building 531 storage areas are as follows:
Area Dimensions Capacity Containment
Flammable 12 ft. x 15.5 ft. 1295 Gallons 129.5 Gallons
Storage Room (up to 19 55-gal drums)
Storage Bays 6.5 ft. x 10.1 ft. 590 Gallons each bay 62.3 Gallons
(Nos. 1-7) (each bay) (up to 10 55-gal drums)
South Side 19 ft. x 15.5 ft. 2,660 Gallons 266 Gallons
Storage Bay No. 8 (up to 36 55-gal drums)
South Side 19 ft. x 15 ft. 2,660 Gallons 270 Gallons
Storage Bay No. 9 (up to 36 55-gal drums)
A. Condition of Containers
If a container holding hazardous waste is not in good condition(e.g., severe rusting, apparent
structural defects) or if it begins to leak, the Permittee shall transfer the hazardous waste from such
container to a container that is in good condition or manage the waste in some other way that
complies with the requirements of this permit.
III-1
